Richardson (The Big Bopper) in a plane crash, the magnificent and legendary song became a cultural phenomenon, going straight to the hearts of the audience every time Don McLean plays it. The song was voted number 5 in the 365 Songs of the Century compiled by the Recording Industry Association of America.
