Engelbert Humperdinck is well into his late ‘80s, but the legendary singer remains one of the top performers around! Humperdinck, who emerged from Leicester, England, in 1956, has recorded some of the most iconic songs of the 20th century. In 1967, he dropped his breakout hit, “Release Me,” which peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the U.K. chart. The single, spawned from Humperdinck’s debut album, also became his breakthrough record in the U.S. and the U.K. During this time, it was not unusual for popular contemporary singers to release two albums in a year. This was to take advantage of the hype, and with the growing demand for new songs from fans, Humperdinck dropped his sophomore album, The Last Waltz, a few months later. The album soared to number 3 in the U.K. and number 10 on the Billboard 200. The Last Waltz featured the chart-topping title track, debuting at number 25 in the U.S. and 1 in the U.K. The single was also Humperdinck’s first song to top the charts in five other countries.
The following year, Humperdinck released the song “Les Bicyclettes de Belsize.” The single became the theme song for the musical film of the same name. It performed phenomenally on the U.S. and U.K. charts and was later featured in Humperdinck’s fourth self-titled album, Engelbert, released in 1969. That same year, he dropped another self-titled effort which spawned several hits, “I’m a Better Man,” “Gentle on My Mind,” “Love Letters,” and “Didn’t We.”
In the following decade, Humperdinck dropped several staple ballads that dominated the charts. By this time, he has proven his longevity as an artist and benchmarks his role as one of the most iconic balladeers in modern music. He has notably dropped over 100 albums consisting of studio, compilations, live recordings, special releases, and holiday editions. Moreover, he has sold over 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time.
